What does it mean? And why is it important?
Living Creatively. Living a creative life. Incorporating creativity into everyday life. These phrases are all over the place and have only been getting more and more popular as more and more people are starting creative businesses. (I know, I use them all the time on my site.)
What do these buzzwords mean? Well, I could go all Webster’s Dictionary on you and give you the proper definition but I think I’ll skip that and give you a general idea.
Living creatively is a lifestyle. It’s a series of choices you make to incorporate creativity into your life. And since creativity is different for every person there is no limit to what you can do. Simply put, living a creative life means don’t be boring. Live your life and don’t just exist in it.
What kind of choices should you make to live that creative life? It’s is completely up to you and how much effort you want to put into it. You can do anything from going to see more plays to reading more books, from decorating your home a certain way to creating something that’s just for you. You can do something as effortless as buying some fresh flowers to keep on your desk or you can do something a little more intensive like learning a new skill. The possibilities are endless.
So why is living creatively important?
Speaking from personal experience, being creative leads to a happier, more productive life. I went through kind of a dark period during my early twenties and when I think back on it it’s partly because I didn’t have anything to work toward. I wasn’t being creative in my life and I was just existing. I went to work and that was about it. It wasn’t until early 2015 that I started being creative regularly and now a year later I am much happier and more productive. I mean, I launched my own online business and blog! Never in a million years did I think I could do this yet here I am. (If you’d like to read a little bit more about this visit my ABOUT page.)
Being creative allows you to go on a personal journey and figure out the best life for you.
But how can you live a creative life if you aren’t creative? You don’t have to be an artist to be creative. You don’t have to be a master at crafts to craft a life for yourself. Take a solo trip to a place you’ve never been, sit in the park and just watch nature, handwrite a letter to your best friend. All of these things are ways to incorporate creativity into your life without having any artistic skills.
Of course, don’t be afraid to be artistic. Take a painting class and don’t care if you’re terrible. Very few people are artistic geniuses from the very beginning. Most of them started with the basics and practiced to improve their skills. If they can do it, you can do it.
