Every Friday, I like to feature a different artist and their work. Sometimes you’ll even see my own artwork featured. It’s a nice way to get to know different artists, their creative process, and the story behind some of their works of art.
It’s Friday Art Crawl
This week’s artist is Deanna Kei of DeannaKei.com. She is a designer, stylist, and fashion illustrator based in New York City.
A little bit about Deanna:
Deanna describes herself as a visual person. At some point during her childhood, someone handed her a crayon and she never let go! My bets are on Deanna’s grandmother who was an artist as well. They would always draw and color together when Deanna was younger. She would often create her own characters and draw their entire wardrobe.
It wasn’t until Deanna read a comic about design in high school that she thought about fashion design. It opened up a world of possibilities for her. She got to work on a portfolio and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology after graduation. The Fashion Art classes were her favorite because of her love of drawing and designing.
As a fashion designer, she often works with technical sketches so her fashion illustrations give her an outlet to express herself and have some freedom to have fun on paper. Working in such a fast-paced industry it can be hard to find time for fun pretty sketches.
“If you're not getting to do everything you want, you've got to make your own time for what's important to you. Sketching makes me happy and so even if I'm exhausted when I get home from work, I make sure to keep drawing.”
Deanna is most comfortable working with pencil but she also loves to mix things up with photoshop, ink, paint, markers, and the occasional paper or fabric cut-out! She is constantly finding art around her in everyday life.
This is one of Deanna’s sketches inspired by a look from the Natori SS16 Runway show. It’s done entirely in ink.
“I really love shapes and color and the contrast between space and negative space. I try to learn something new with each sketch. I still have a lot to improve. It’s a fun journey.
I love collaborating and working together with other creatives and dreamers. I'm always open to new suggestions and projects.”
“I just love Deanna’s illustrations. Each one has its own distinct mood, personality, and story to tell. I am always in awe of fashion illustrators and their ability to capture the way clothes can come to life and Deanna is no exception to that. She has incredible skill and I can’t wait to see what she does next!”
Deanna has a series of posts on her blog where she interviews fashion bloggers that you can check out here.
Make sure you stay tuned for next week's Friday Art! Crawl and check out last week's feature: Allie Bigoness.
